ACUTE
Active process. Relatively recent event.
ACUTE CHOLECYSTITIS
"Sick" gallbladder in which there is active inflammation.
ACUTE RESPIRATORY DISTRESS SYNDROME (ARDS)
A disease process that causes the blood vessels in the lungs to be “leaky”. This results in lungs that are “soaked” with fluid. The end result is pulmonary edema.
ADDITIONAL VIEWS
These are mammograms that are taken with angles and/or positions that are different from the standard craniocaudal and mediolateral oblique views. Some examples are spot compression, spot magnification, , exaggerated lateral, mediolateral and tangential views.
ADENOCARCINOMA
Cancerous growth.
ADENOHYPOPHYSIS
The front part of the pituitary gland.
ADENOID CYSTIC CARCINOMA
A cancer of the salivary glands.
ADENOIDAL HYPERPLASIA
An enlargement or growth of the lymph nodes or tonsils of the neck. Usually seen in younger patients and often benign. Can be a sign of infection or occasionally cancer.
ADENOMA
Non-cancerous growth. Commonly seen in the liver and adrenal glands.
ADENOMYOMATOSIS
Tiny deposits of cholesterol within/ near the gallbladder wall. Sometimes, this can be associated with gallstones. This condition may be confused with polyps (small growth in the wall of gallbladder).
