OSTEOID
Of or referring to bone.
OSTEOPHYTE
Abnormal bony growth around joint from wear and tear. This is commonly seen with arthritis. It is not cancerous.
OSTEOPHYTOSIS
A term used to describe the presence of many osteophytes.
PARAVERTEBRAL
Located next to the vertebra or spine. Often referred to as the “paravertebral space”.
PARS FRACTURE
A fracture of the pars interarticularis (the piece of bone connecting the front and back of the spinal column. Will often result in a “slip” or misalignment of the spine. Can result from repeated injury or arthritis of the ligaments.
PATHOGNOMONIC
Refers to disease process that is obvious and characteristic.
PATHOLOGIC
Refers to a process that is considered abnormal. Is usually considered malignant or representing disease.
RADICULOPATHY
Symptoms that are related to a pinched nerve. They can be on either side of the body or both. The feeling is often described as “electrical” pain or “pins and needles”. Can often result from a pinched nerve from a disc herniation.
S-SHAPED
Refers to a scoliosis of the spine that looks like the letter S. It bends both to the right and to the left.
SCOLIOSIS
Refers to the abnormal curvature of the spine. A scoliosis means that the spinal alignment is not normal or straight. There are different types and severities of scoliosis.
