L2

The second lumbar vertebra towards the upper back.

L3

The third lumbar vertebra towards the mid back.

L4

The fourth lumbar vertebra towards the lower back.

L5

The fifth lumbar vertebra towards the lowest part of the back.

LAMINA

A portion of the vertebra that connect the spinous process to the transverse process.  If you can imagine the vertebra as a pretzel it is part of the ring connecting the front part of the vertebra to the back part.

LAMINECTOMY

A surgical procedure that removes or cuts the lamina. Is usually performed to relieve or improve a spinal stenosis.

LAMINOTOMY

A surgical procedure that removes a small portion of the lamina.  Is usually performed to relieve or improve spinal stenosis.

LAXITY

Looseness.  A process that can affect the ligaments in the spine leading to abnormal curvatures or scoliosis.  Is usually part of the aging process and is referred to as “ligamentous laxity”.

LEVOCONVEX

Refers to an abnormal curvature (or scoliosis) of the spine to the left.  “Levo” is Latin for left.

LIGAMENT

A band of fibrous tissue connecting bones or joints.
