OSTEOSARCOMA OF THE MANDIBLE

A malignant tumor of the mandible.  Presents as a painful mass of the mandible.  Early diagnosis and surgery will lead to a high chance of survival.

PALATINE TONSIL

Also known as the “faucial” tonsil.  The tonsils at the back of the throat that can be seen when you open your mouth.  They can become infected, inflamed, or even cancerous.

PARAGANGLIOMA

An abnormal collection of blood vessels in the neck.  If too big or causing symptoms, it can be treated.  They can be located anywhere from the ear drum, along the jugular, or at the carotid artery.

PAROTID DUCT

Also known as “Stenson’s” duct. It is a a tubular canal that allows salivary juices to flow.  If obstructed, or blocked, it can become inflamed and infected.

PAROTITIS

An infection of the parotid gland. It can be related to a virus, bacteria, or from a stone blocking a duct.

PATHOLOGIC LYMPH NODE

A lymph node that is worrisome for cancer or infection.  It us usually enlarged.

PERITONSILAR ABSCESS

A tonsilar abscess that spreads to the surrounding tissues.  It may be harder for your doctor to drain if it is located deep in the neck.

PHARYNX

The body part above the larynx (voice box) but below the nose.

POLYP

A non-cancerous swelling of tissue in the sinuses or nasal cavity.  These are usually benign but can grow and cause symptoms.

PYRIFORM SINUS

A small air pocket located behind and above the vocal cords.  Fluid, debris, or even cancer can occur here.
