DERMOID (neck)

An abnormal collection of tissue usually containing fat.  It can be found in the neck and is usually a birth defect and often benign.

DERMOID OF THE ORAL CAVITY

A collection of fluid, tissue, and fat occurring in the neck.  They are also called epidermoids.  They are usually located in the middle of the neck as opposed to the sides.  Patients are usually in their 30s, male, and present with a painless mass which can cause difficulty in swallowing.  They can be treated surgically and removed.

ENHANCING LYMPH NODE

A lymph node that takes up contrast dye appears bright white on CT scan or MRI. It can be a sign of infection/inflammation or cancer.

EPIGLOTTIS

A small tissue flap that closes when you swallow so food or drink doesn’t spill into your windpipe or trachea.

EPIGLOTTITIS

An infection or inflammation of the epiglottis.  Can be serious as the epiglottis can swell and block airflow into the lungs.

ESTHESIONEUROBLASTOMA

A malignant tumor or cancer that grows at the top of the nasal bone where the tissues of your smell system are located.  Usually occurs in teenagers or middle-aged people and have symptoms of a runny  nose.  This could require surgery and/or radiation treatments.

FACIAL CELLULITIS

An infection of the skin tissues of the face.

FAUCIAL TONSIL SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Also called “palatine” tonsil.  A maligant cancer of the tonsils.  Treatment usually involves surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation.

FOSSA OF ROSENMULLER

An atomic space in the back of the throat that can be a location for cancer. Often the ear, nose and throat doctor can see tumors in this location but a CAT scan can look for even deeper signs of disease.

HYPERTROPHY

Thickening of a structure (usually muscle) and considered abnormal. To enlarge or get big.
