VOCAL CORD PARALYSIS

This will cause a hoarse voice.  Can involve one or both of the vocal cords.  Usually related to an infection but cancer or masses can also cause this.

VALLECULAR AIR SPACE OR SINUS

A small air pocket located in front and above the vocal cords.  Fluid, debris, or even cancer can occur here.

TORNWALDT CYST

A benign cystic growth in the back of the throat.  It is non-symptomatic and is usually of no consequence.  They can be a cause of bad breath when they get infected.

TONSILLAR ABSCESS

A collection of infection or pus located in the tonsils of the back of the throat.  Patients will have fever, sore throat, and difficulty swallowing.  You should be seen by a doctor who will either drain it with a needle and/or put you on antibiotics.

TONGUE BASE

The very back and bottom of the tongue.

THYROIDECTOMY

A surgical procedure that removes the thyroid gland.  It can be complete or partial.

THYROGLOSSAL DUCT CYST

A small fluid collection in the front of the neck just above the “adam’s apple”.  It is related to birth defect and is usually benign.

SUPPURATIVE LYMPH NODES

Infection with pus in the lymph node.  If they rupture they can form an abscess collection.

SUBMANDIBULAR GLAND

Salivary glands located below the jaw bone on each side at the base of the tongue.

SUBMANDIBULAR DUCT

Also known as “Warthin’s” duct.  It is a tubular canal that allows salivary juices to flow.  If obstructed or blocked, it can become inflamed or infected.
