RESTRICTED DIFFUSION
A bright spot on diffusion MR images. This often represents an area of dead brain or stroke.
RINGDOWN ARTIFACT
Ultrasound finding that looks like comet tail in the sky. It can be seen with a small calcium deposit, cholesterol deposit, or sometimes foreign objects.
SAGITTAL
An MR term used to describe the way the organ is scanned. A sagittal scan is like slicing the body from the front of the nose to the back.
SCROTAL
Anything related to scrotum, where testicles are found.
SEQUENCE
In MRI a sequence is a type of scan technique that is used to analyze tissue in an organ. There are many different sequences used during an MRI.
STAGE
To determine how much cancer has spread in the body. Higher stage is worse.
STAGING
System to determine how much cancer has spread in the body. Higher staging number is worse.
STIR
An MRI technique that makes any fluid containing structure very bright. It cannot tell the difference between brightness related to tumor, trauma, infection, or surgical changes however.
STREAK ARTIFACT
Shiny lines that partially hides your body parts on CT. Typically caused by metallic objects (such as hip replacement).
