OSTEOPOROSIS

Bone density is severely decreased compared to healthy individual.  High risk of fracture.

OSTOMY

Putting a hole in the body to remove the contents inside the body part. For example, colostomy means draining stool from the colon to a bag outside the body. Nephrostomy means draining urine from the kidney to a bag outside the body.

PATHOLOGY

Disease or disease process.  Your report may state “no acute pathology” which basically means the scan is negative for acute disease.

PATULOUS

Something that stays open or widened. Floppy.

PERCUTANEOUS

Refers to procedures done through the skin. For example, percutaneous drain means a drain that goes through your skin and into the body. This is often used to drain abscess (pus) inside your body.

PERFUSION

Blood flow to something.

PET SCAN

Type of Nuclear Medicine exam which is excellent at detecting many types of cancer in your body.  Cancers that use a lot of sugar are detected by this study.  Doctors will often use this exam to determine how much cancer has spread in your body, which helps in planning the treatment strategy.

PHOTOPENIC

Means “cold” spots on nuclear medicine exams.  Has different meaning depending on the type of exam.

PLANAR

A term in MRI used to describe how a scan is made.   There are different “planes” on MRI such as sagittal, coronal, axial, and oblique.

POSITIVE

Often used in radiology reports to describe a process this is consistent with disease.  For example the report may state “positive for cancer” which means that there is cancer present.
