NECROSIS
Tissue death, often from lack of blood supply (ischemia).
NECROTIC
Becoming pus-like, often from infection or cancer. For example, necrotic lymph node is a lymph node that has fluid or pus in the center.
NEGATIVE
This is confusing terminology. When this word is used to describe an x-ray, it means that the x-ray is NORMAL. For example, a negative chest x-ray is a normal chest x-ray.
OPACIFICATION
A term used on xray. Refers to an opacity or white spot that is abnormal.
OPACITY
A white spot seen on a chest x-ray. This may represent an area of infection, compressed lung (atelectasis) or inflammation. Also known as “density” or “infiltrate”.
OSSIFICATION
Refers to the structure that is forming bone material or looks like bone material.
OSTEOID
Of or referring to bone.
OSTEOPENIA
Bone density is mildly decreased compared to healthy individual. Mild risk of fracture.
OSTEOPHYTE
Abnormal bony growth around joint from wear and tear. This is commonly seen with arthritis. It is not cancerous.
OSTEOPOIKILOSIS
A condition with many bone islands (non cancerous growth) around joints. Usually does not cause pain.
