Body Part - Misc
SUBCUTANEOUS
Space below the skin where fat is usually located.
SUBDERMAL
Below the dermis layer of skin.
SUSCEPTIBILITY
An area of darkness on MRI that is caused by metal, iron, blood products, or calcium.
SUSCEPTIBILITY ARTIFACT
An MRI term used to describe the black blotches and distortion as a result of metal in the body such as spine or dental hardware. It makes it hard to look at that part of the body.
SUV (STANDARDIZED UPTAKE VALUE)
Number assigned to indicate how actively cancers are using sugar on PET scans. Higher SUV generally implies more active cancer.
SWI
Susceptibility weighted imaging. Is an MRI sequence that helps to pick up very tiny areas of blood products, iron, or calcium deposits.
T1
An MRI sequence or technique that is used to analyze tissue in the body. Often T1 is good at picking up fat, blood, and protein making it appear white on MR scans.
T1 SHORTENING
Refers to the appearance of tissue on MRI as a “white spot”. T1 shortening can occur as a result of contrast dye turning the tissue white or any disease that turns tissue white such as blood or protein material.
T2
An MRI sequence or technique that is used to analyze tissue in the body. Often T2 is good at picking up fluid, water, and certain blood products making it appear white on MR scans.
T2 HYPERINTENSITY
Refers to tissue that looks bright on MR scans. This helps to characterize tissue as normal, blood, protein or fat.
