SPINAL EPIDURAL ABSCESS

A collection of pus or infection located in the epidural space.

SPINE

Back bone.

SPLENECTOMY

Surgical removal of spleen.

SPLENOMEGALY

Enlarged spleen.

SPLENULE

Small extra spleen tissue. Can be a normal finding but also seen after spleen injury or spleen surgery/removal.

SPONDYLOLISTHESIS

A slippage or misalignment of the spine.  Usually the result of arthritis to the supporting ligaments of the spine.  Can also result from a “pars” fracture.

SPONDYLOLYSIS

A fracture of the pars interarticularis (the piece of bone connecting the front and back of the spinal column).  Will often result in a “slip” or misalignment of the spine.  Can result from repeated injury or arthritis of the ligaments.

SPONDYLOSIS

Arthritis of the spine.  Can involve the cervical, thoracic, or lumbar spine.

SPOT COMPRESSION VIEW

This is a mammogram view/technique used to see if an asymmetry or focal asymmetry is a real mass. Sometimes, an asymmetry or focal asymmetry will turn out to be a “fake-out” and the mammogram will be cleared to be cancer-free.

SPOT MAGNIFICATION VIEW

This is a mammogram view/technique focused on an area of concern, especially for calcifications. After this test, the radiologist will determine if the mammogram can be cleared to be cancer-free or go on to additional views or recommend a biopsy.
