SIALOLITH

A stone in the salivary glands.  Usually involves the parotid glands but can also involve the submandibular glands.

SIALOLITHIATHIS

An infection of the salivary glands (usually the parotid or submandibular glands) that is cause by stones obstructing the ducts.

SIGNET RING SIGN

A chest x-ray finding that indicates bronchiectasis.

SILENT SINUS SYNDROME

A painless process where the maxillary sinus gets small from a blockage.  As a result the eye socket on the same side gets small as well and the eye looks as if its pulled in.

SILHOUETTE SIGN

A chest x-ray finding that can be helpful for detecting pneumonia.  Silhouette sign involving the heart results in “blurring” the outline of the heart on a chest x-ray.

SILICONE GRANULOMA

Masses in the breast that are caused by the body’s reaction to liquid silicone that has leaked out of a breast implant. These masses are not cancerous.

SIMPLE CYST

A pocket of fluid without any solid components or debris. This is not cancerous and is definitively diagnosed with an ultrasound.

SINONASAL SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

A malignant cancer of the sinus that grows into the sinus cavities.  Usually patients are older males with a history of long standing sinusitis not responding to medical treatment.

SINUS

A cavity or crevasse.

SINUSITIS

Infection or inflammation of the sinuses.  It is usually viral but can be bacterial or even related to fungal disease.
