MEDIASTINAL SHIFT
Movement of the mediastinum to the left or right side. This can be seen with a large pneumothorax, lung collapse (atelectasis), pleural effusion or lung mass.
MEDIASTINAL WIDENING
Apparent enlargement of the mediastinum. This can be seen with enlarged lymph nodes, mediastinal masses or bleeding into the mediastinum.
MEDIASTINITIS
Inflammation of the mediastinum.
MEDIASTINUM
Space in the middle of the chest, located between the lungs. It contains the heart, trachea, large blood vessels, esophagus and lymph nodes.
MEDULLARY CARCINOMA
A type of breast cancer that tends to grow fast. However, the prognosis is usually good.
MENINGEAL CARCINOMATOSIS
Refers to a cancer covering the surface of the brain or spinal cord.
MENINGES
The covering of the brain.
MENINGIOMA
A tumor that forms from the covering of the brain. They can be problematic if large enough to cause pressure effect on the brain. It is considered benign in that it doesn’t spread but they can grow in size over time.
MENISCUS
“Cushion” in our knee joint made out of cartilage.
MESENTERIC
Anything related to mesentery (see mesentery).
