Letter L
LEVEL 1, 2, 3, 4, OR 5
The location of a lymph node or mass in the neck. Doctors use this to communicate where the problem is located. Level 1 is higher towards the jaw and level 5 is lower just above the collar bone.
LEVOCONVEX
Refers to an abnormal curvature (or scoliosis) of the spine to the left. “Levo” is Latin for left.
LIGAMENT
A band of fibrous tissue connecting bones or joints.
LIGAMENTUM FLAVUM
The spinal ligament towards the back of the spine that helps to support the back. Often a “hypertrophied” or thickened ligamentum flavum contribute to spinal stenosis. They become thickened as a part of aging and arthritis.
LIMITED STUDY
Less than adequate study. The correct diagnosis will be difficult to make on a limited study.
LINGUAL THYROID
Abnormal thyroid tissue located at the tongue base or floor of the mouth. Can expand and cause symptoms related to mass effect. Rarely can become cancerous and can be treated surgically or with oral medication.
LINGUAL TONSIL SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
A malignant tumor arising in the lingual tonsillar area of the neck usually near the base of the tongue. Treatment usually requires surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation.
LINGUINI SIGN
This is a MRI finding that indicates silicone breast implant rupture.
LINGULA
Part of the lung (left upper lobe) that is next to the left side of the heart.
LIPOMA
Common non-cancerous tumor made up of fat.
