INVASIVE LOBULAR CARCINOMA

A type of breast cancer that starts in the milk-producing glands (lobules). This cancer has spread outside of the lobules. This cancer may be difficult to see on a mammogram.

INVERTED PAPILLOMA

A tumor of the nasal tissue that is benign, or non-cancerous.  It usually occurs in adults but can be fast growing and cause symptoms related to blockage of the sinuses.

INVOLUTIONAL

The process of getting smaller or shrinking.  In the brain it refers to a shrunken brain that can be seen with aging, or as a reaction to an injury, tumor, or surgery.

IPSILATERAL

Adjective. Same side. If a woman says, “I feel a lump in my right breast and there is pain in the ipsilateral arm.”, it means that there is pain in the right arm.

ISCHEMIA

Lacking normal blood supply to a body part. Ischemia can lead to tissue death (necrosis), if the lack of blood supply is long enough.

ISCHEMIC

Anything related to lack of normal blood supply to tissue.

ISCHEMIC (brain)

In the brain this refers to dead tissue as a result of a blood vessel that is blocked or occluded.

ISCHEMIC INFARCT

The medical term for stroke. It refers to dead tissue from lack of oxygen caused by a clogged artery.

ISOECHOIC

Same brightness as normal tissue in the nearby area. For example, isoechoic mass in the kidney means a mass with same brightness as the kidney tissue.

ISOECHOIC (bone)

Same brightness as normal tissue in the nearby area on ultrasound.  For example, isoechoic mass in the bone means a mass with same brightness as the bone.
