HYPOVENTILATORY CHANGES

Abnormal appearance of the lungs on a chest x-ray caused by taking a shallow breath (less than full inspiration).  This goes away when the patient takes a deep breath.

HYPOINTENSE

An MRI term used to describe organ tissue that looks dark rather than bright.  Often the term is followed by the sequence used.  For example, your report may state “hypointense T2 signal”.  This means that the tissue looks dark on T2 sequences.

HYPOINFLATION OF THE LUNGS

Less than full inspiration.  This can lead to hypoventilatory changes of the lungs on a chest x-ray.

HYPOECHOIC

Appears dark on ultrasound. This can help Radiologists characterize the abnormality on ultrasound.

HYPODENSE

Appears dark on CT. This can help Radiologists characterize the abnormality on CT.

HYPOATTENUATING

Appears dark on CT. This can help Radiologists characterize the abnormality on CT.

HYPERTROPHY

Thickening of a structure (usually muscle) and considered abnormal. To enlarge or get big.

HYPERTENSIVE HEMORRHAGE

Refers to stroke that has bled as a result of high blood pressure or hypertension.

HYPERPLASIA

Something that is growing faster or bigger than normal.

HYPEROSTOSIS FRONTALIS INTERNA

Extra bone growth in the front part of the skull.  This is not cancerous.
