GLENOID
“Socket” of the shoulder.
GLIOMATOSIS
A malignant cancerous condition of the white matter or “glial” cells of the brain.
GLIOSIS
Refers to the healed appearance of brain tissue after injury, stroke, infection, tumor, or surgery.
GOLDEN S SIGN
Collapse of the right upper lobe caused by a mass near the right hilum. This causes a “S” shaped outline at the upper part of the right lung.
GRADE
Refers to size and appearance of cancer. Generally higher grade is worse.
GRADIENT
A type of MRI sequence that is used to help characterize tissue that contains iron, blood, or calcium.
GRADIENT SUSCEPTIBILITY
A darkening effect on MR scans that occurs with tissue containing blood products, calcium, or iron.
GRANULOMA
Usually noncancerous growth (comes from the word “granule”) that is made of long-standing inflammatory cells. This may be related to an old, inactive infection. It is often calcified.
GRANULOMA (chest)
A small mass in the lung (comes from the word “granule”) that is made of long-standing inflammatory cells. This may be related to an old, inactive infection. It is often calcified. It looks like a white dot on a chest x-ray.
GRAY MATTER
The darker outer layer of the brain. As opposed to white matter which is the inner “whiter” piece of brain.
