ESTHESIONEUROBLASTOMA

A malignant tumor or cancer that grows at the top of the nasal bone where the tissues of your smell system are located.  Usually occurs in teenagers or middle-aged people and have symptoms of a runny  nose.  This could require surgery and/or radiation treatments.

ESTROGEN RECEPTOR (ER)

A receptor that can be associated with breast cancer. If this receptor is present, there is a chance that hormone therapy can be used as part of the treatment for breast cancer.

EWING’S SARCOMA

Type of bone cancer.

EX-VACUO

A Latin term which means “from a vacuum”.

EX-VACUO DILITATION

Used to describe what happens to the brain or ventricle after an injury or surgery.  The normal part of the brain and ventricle near the injured area gets bigger and takes up the space.  This is part of the normal healing process of the brain.

EXCISIONAL BIOPSY

Surgical procedure to cut out an abnormal area or lesion in the breast. This is performed by a breast surgeon.

EXOPHTHALMOS

A condition of the eye ball where it appears enlarged from excess fat in the eye socket pushing it out.  It is usually seen with thyroid disease although there are many other causes such as infection, inflammation, and tumor.

EXOPHYTIC

Means something is “sticking out” beyond the boundary of an area.  For example, exophytic mass in the bone means a mass that “sticks out” beyond the edge of the bone.

EXTRA

Outside of something.

EXTRA-AXIAL

The space located outside the brain tissue but under the skull.  There are two extraaxial spaces – the subdural and epidural space.
