ADENOPATHY

Refers to enlarged or abnormal lymph nodes. Both benign conditions (such as infection/ inflammation) and cancer can cause this.

ADNEXA

Space immediately next to the uterus in female pelvis, one on each side. For example, ovary is found in the adnexa.

ADNEXAL

Anything related to adnexa (see above).

AERATION

Inflating the lung with air.

AIR BRONCHOGRAM SIGN

Distinct outlining of the small airways in the lungs on a chest x-ray.  This is most commonly seen in pneumonia.

AIR SPACE DISEASE

Fluid in a part of the lungs.  Normally, all parts of the lungs should be filled with air.  This term is interchangeable with “alveolar disease”.  This is often seen with pneumonia or severe pulmonary edema.

AIR-FLUID LEVEL

A finding that indicates the presence of both air and fluid in a pocket.  This can be seen with a cavitary process or a hiatal hernia.

ALIGNMENT

The way that the vertebrae (backbone) are stacked on top of each other.  Normally aligned vertebrae are stacked on each other like Lego blocks without slippage.

ALLERGIC FUNGAL SINUSITIS

This is a sinus infection this is caused by a fungus rather than a bacterium or virus.  It usually requires treatment by an ENT doctor.  It has a characteristic look on CT with bright or “dense” secretions.
