CORONA RADIATA
The portion of the white matter located just above the ventricles. When looking down at the brain it resembles or looks like the crown, or “corona”, on a king or queen.
CORPUS CALLOSUM
A normal structure in the middle of the brain. It consists of “white matter” and is where the fibers of the brain cross. Diseases of the corpus callosum are usually related to trauma, stroke, multiple sclerosis, lymphoma, or malignant brain tumor.
CORTEX
The outer surface of the brain that consists of gray matter.
CORTICAL
Refers to a process of the brain cortex.
CORTICAL LAMINAR NECROSIS
Used to describe the appearance of the brain surface that has been subjected to injury. It is part of the normal healing process.
COUP
Refers to the brain injury that occurs at the site of impact or trauma.
CRANIAL
Of or referring to the cranium.
CRANIOSYNOSTOSIS
An abnormal condition where the sutures of the skull are fused too early in childhood. A suture is the point where two pieces of bone meet and are fused, or “zipped-up”, together. This process can cause an abnormal shape of the skull.
CRANIUM
The head.
CSF
Cerebral Spinal Fluid. It is made in the brain by the choroid plexus. It is used as a lubricant for the structure of the brain and spinal cord. If you ever had a spinal tap, or lumbar puncture, the CSF is collected.
