CHOROID PLEXUS
A normal structure in the brain that is responsible for making brain fluid, or “CSF”.
CHRONIC
Long standing. Old. Not acute.
CHRONIC INVOLUTIONAL CHANGES
Refers to the appearance of the brain that has shrunk.
CHRONIC SMALL VESSEL ISCHEMIC DISEASE
A term used to describe the appearance of the brain that has been subjected to multiple tiny infarctions or “mini-strokes” over many years. Generally, this pattern is seen in patients with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and/or diabetes.
CIRCLE OF WILLIS
A collection of blood vessels in the brain that are connected forming what looks like a circle in the middle of the brain. It is present in all humans. It is very important as it helps to keep blood moving to all parts of the brain especially if there is a blockage in one part.
CISTERN
A space or cavity.
COLLOID CYST
An abnormal collection of blood, protein, and debris that occurs in the 3rd ventricle region of the brain. They can cause problems if they get too big and obstruct/block the flow of CSF in the brain.
CONGENITAL
Refers to a process that you are born with.
CONTRE-COUP
Refers to the brain injury that occurs at the opposite side of impact or trauma. For example, if you hit your head on the right side, then the left may experience the contre-coup injury.
CONTUSION (brain)
An abrasion or bump of the brain cortex usually related to trauma or injury. Contusions could result in bleeding where it is then called a hemorrhagic contusion.
