BERRY ANEURYSM
Used to describe an aneurysm that looks like a small “berry” or sac.
BLOOD BRAIN BARRIER
Also called the “BBB”. It is a normal structure that keeps blood in the blood vessels separate from the brain tissue. Different diseases like infection, injury, or tumor can damage the BBB and cause blood to leak into the brain.
BRAIN STEM
The base of the brain. It is the oldest part of our brain and helps us do things like breathing and blinking. If you think of the brain like a piece of cauliflower, the brain stem is the stalk.
BROCA’S
Refers to a certain part of the brain located in the frontal lobe usually on the left side if you are right handed. It is important in that it helps you to make words and speak. If you have a stroke in this area you will not be able to speak.
CAPILLARY TELENGECTASIA
Is a type of vascular anomaly or “malformation” that consists of a tangle of blood vessels. They usually occur in the brain stem or “pons” and are usually of no consequence.
CAUDAD
Located towards the feet. The opposite of cephalad or towards the head.
CAUDAL
Located to or pointing towards the feet.
CAUDATE
Also referred to as the caudate nucleus. Is part of the basal ganglia that helps coordinate movement.
CAVERNOMA
Also called a cavernous angioma or cavernous hemangioma. It is a type of vascular anomaly or “malformation”. They can vary in size and cause problems related to bleeding or mass effect.
