PRE-ORBITAL

The area in front of the eyeball.  Think of your eyelid for example.

PUTAMEN

Located in the central part of the brain.  Sometimes it is called the basal ganglia.  It can be a common location of stroke or hemorrhage related to high blood pressure.

RATHKE’S CYST

Also known as Rathke’s cleft cyst.  Occurs between the anterior (front) and posterior (back) portion of the pituitary gland.  They can be made up of fluid, blood, and/or protein.  They cause symptoms related to their size.

SELLA

A piece of bone bottom of the skull.  The pituitary gland “sits” in this groove.  Also known as “sella turcica”.

SELLA TURCICA

A small groove at the bottom of the skull.  The pituitary gland “sits” in this groove.  Also known as “sella”.

SENILE

A word used to describe a process related to aging.

SENILIC

Of or referring to a “senile” or chronic shrunken brain.

SEPTUM PELLUCIDUM

A thin piece of tissue in the middle of the brain.  It is a normal structure.

SEQUELAE

The end result of a disease or process.  For example, the term “no post-traumatic sequelae” means there was no injury to the body part after trauma.

SMALL VESSEL DISEASE

This means that there have been many “mini-strokes” in the brain.  It can be seen in people with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and/or diabetes.
