CARDIAC SILHOUETTE
White outline of the heart on a chest x-ray.
CARDIOMEDIASTINAL SILHOUETTE
A white area in the middle of the chest on a chest x-ray. It represents the heart and other mediastinal structures (i.e. large blood vessels, lymph nodes). The cardiac silhouette is a part of the cardiomedistinal silhouette. It is the bottom part of the cardiomediastinal silhouette.
CARDIOMEGALY
Enlarged heart.
CARDIOPHRENIC ANGLES
The lower inner corners of the lungs.
CARINA
Branching point of the trachea where it splits into the 2 mainstem bronchi.
CATHETER
A tube.
CAVITARY
Adjective. Containing a “hole”. Cavity forming.
CAVOATRIAL JUNCTION
The location where the superior vena cava meets the right atrium. Please see “superior vena cava”.
CENTRAL LINE
A catheter that is placed into one of the central veins (i.e. internal jugular vein, subclavian vein, common femoral vein). Same as “central venous line”.
CENTRAL VENOUS LINE
A catheter that is placed into one of the central veins (i.e. internal jugular vein, subclavian vein, common femoral vein). Same as “central line”.
