SUPERIOR PERICARDIAL RECESS

Small space between the ascending aorta and the trachea.  It can fill up with fluid.  This can be a normal finding.

SUPERIOR VENA CAVA

Large vein in the chest that brings blood into the heart (right atrium) from the top.  It drains blood from the head and arms.

SUPINE

Lying on the back.

SWAN-GANZ CATHETER

A catheter that is placed into the right or left main pulmonary artery.  It is used to measure the pulmonary artery pressure.

TERATOMA

A tumor containing multiple types of tissue.  For example, a teratoma can contain bone, fat, teeth and hair.  A teratoma often contains fat.

Another word for “chest”.

THYMOMA

A tumor derived from the thymus.  It can be cancerous or noncancerous.

TRACHEA

The main air tube.  It connects the mouth/nose to the lungs.

TREE-IN-BUD

A pattern commonly seen in an infectious or inflammatory process.  This is a finding seen on a chest CT.

VERTEBRA (Pleural – vertebrae)

Basic bone segments of the spine.  There are 7 vertebrae in the cervical spine (upper part of the spine; neck spine).  There are 12 vertebrae in the thoracic spine (middle part of the spine; upper back spine).  There are 5 vertebrae in the lumbar spine (lower part of the spine; lower back spine).
