SCAPULA

The shoulder blade bone.

SEPTIC EMBOLISM

A piece of infected tissue that travels to different parts of the body through the blood.

SIGNET RING SIGN

A chest x-ray finding that indicates bronchiectasis.

SILHOUETTE SIGN

A chest x-ray finding that can be helpful for detecting pneumonia.  Silhouette sign involving the heart results in “blurring” the outline of the heart on a chest x-ray.

SOFT TISSUES

These are tissues of the body excluding bone.  Examples include muscles, tendons, skin, blood vessels, nerves etc.

SPINE

Back bone.

STOMACH BUBBLE

Another word for describing air in the stomach.  It is a normal finding on a chest x-ray.  It is usually seen under the left hemidiaphragm.

SUBCUTANEOUS AIR

Abnormal collection of air in the chest wall.  It is commonly seen after a chest tube placement.  This usually goes away after the chest tube is repositioned or removed.

SUBDIAPHRAGMATIC

Below the diaphragm.  Sometimes used to describe the position of the NG tube tip.

SUBOPTIMAL EXAM

Bad quality exam.  A correct diagnosis is very difficult to make on this type of exam.
