ANASTOMOSIS
Refers to the point where two things are connected together. Often refers to intestine, where surgeons connect two parts of intestine. For example, ileocolonic anastomosis refers to the point where ileum (last part of small intestine) is connected to colon (large intestine).
ANEURYSM
Area of bulging/ dilation. Often refers to blood vessel.
ANGIOMYOLIPOMA
Non-cancerous growth in the kidney containing fat and blood vessels. When they become large, they can sometimes result in bleeding, which can be a serious condition.
ANTERIOR
Front part of something.
AORTA
The largest artery in the body. It is directly connected to the heart (left ventricle). It supplies oxygen throughout our body.
APPENDICOLITH
Stone within appendix. It can be associated appendicitis, if the stone causes blockage within the appendix.
ARTHROPLASTY
Joint replacement surgery. Hips, knees, and shoulders are most common locations for this type of surgery.
ASCITES
Water in your abdomen. It can be caused by many things such as having too much IV fluid, heart failure, cancer, cirrhosis (sick liver), etc.
ATELECTASIS
An area of compressed or deflated lung. Large atelectasis is sometimes called “collapsed lung”.
ATHEROSCLEROSIS
Disease of the arteries that can cause narrowing. This is caused by abnormal fat and calcium deposits that build up in the wall of the artery.
