SUBMANDIBULAR DUCT
Also known as "Warthin's" duct. It is a tubular canal that allows salivary juices to flow. If obstructed or blocked, it can become inflamed or infected.
SUBMANDIBULAR GLAND
Salivary glands located below the jaw bone on each side at the base of the tongue.
SUBOPTIMAL EXAM
Bad quality exam. A correct diagnosis is very difficult to make on this type of exam.
SULCAL
Of or relating to the sulcus. In the brain, the sulcus is the space between the folds of the brain.
SULCAL EFFACEMENT
The sulci of the brain are squished together. Effacement means that they are blurred and not well seen. Usually this is due to something pushing on the brain like blood, stroke, or tumor.

The space between the folds of the brain.
SUPERIOR MESENTERIC VEIN
Main vein that carries blood from the intestine into portal vein.
SUPERIOR PERICARDIAL RECESS
Small space between the ascending aorta and the trachea. It can fill up with fluid. This can be a normal finding.
SUPERIOR VENA CAVA
Large vein in the chest that brings blood into the heart (right atrium) from the top. It drains blood from the head and arms.
SUPINE
Lying on the back.
