SUBCORTICAL
The area just below the surface of the brain.
SUBCORTICAL WHTE MATTER
The white matter of the brain. The white matter are the nerve fibers in the brain. They look white because they are covered in fat. Think of electrical wires that are covered with insulation.
SUBCUTANEOUS
Space below the skin where fat is usually located.
SUBCUTANEOUS AIR
Abnormal collection of air in the chest wall. It is commonly seen after a chest tube placement. This usually goes away after the chest tube is repositioned or removed.
SUBDERMAL
Below the dermis layer of skin.
SUBDIAPHRAGMATIC
Below the diaphragm. Sometimes used to describe the position of the NG tube tip.
SUBDURAL
Means below or under the dura. The dura is the thick covering over the brain.
SUBDURAL EMPYEMA
Pus or infection located in the subdural space of the brain.
SUBDURAL HEMATOMA
Blood in the brain. The blood collects on top of the brain surface. The subdural space is below or under the dura.
SUBDURAL HYGROMA
Fluid or water located in the subdural space of the brain.
