SPONDYLOLYSIS
A fracture of the pars interarticularis (the piece of bone connecting the front and back of the spinal column). Will often result in a "slip" or misalignment of the spine. Can result from repeated injury or arthritis of the ligaments.
SPONDYLOSIS
Arthritis of the spine. Can involve the cervical, thoracic, or lumbar spine.
SPOT COMPRESSION VIEW
This is a mammogram view/technique used to see if an asymmetry or focal asymmetry is a real mass. Sometimes, an asymmetry or focal asymmetry will turn out to be a "fake-out" and the mammogram will be cleared to be cancer-free.
SPOT MAGNIFICATION VIEW
This is a mammogram view/technique focused on an area of concern, especially for calcifications. After this test, the radiologist will determine if the mammogram can be cleared to be cancer-free or go on to additional views or recommend a biopsy.
SPUR
Benign bony growth.
STAGE
To determine how much cancer has spread in the body. Higher stage is worse.
STAGING
System to determine how much cancer has spread in the body. Higher staging number is worse.
STEATOSIS
Fatty changes or increased fat content of something. For example, steatosis of liver means increased fat content of liver.
STENOSIS
A narrowing of the spinal canal. Usually graded as mild, moderate, or severe.
STEPLADDER SIGN
An ultrasound finding that is seen with a breast implant rupture. More specifically, this indicates an intracapsular breast implant rupture.
