PRONE
Lying on your stomach.
PROXIMAL
Closer end of something. Opposite of distal (far end of something).
PSEUDOANEURYSM
Blood vessel bulging out in one spot. Pseudoaneurysm can grow and even rupture ("burst open").
PSEUDOCYST
Sac of liquid containing pancreatic "juice", often formed in the abdomen after a bout of pancreatitis. When large, they can become infected or cause things around it to be squished ("mass effect"). In such cases, drainage or surgical removal may be necessary.
PUBIC SYMPHYSIS
Bone in the middle of the pubic area.
PULMONARY EDEMA
Fluid in the lungs. Normal lungs can be thought of as dry sponges containing multiple air spaces. In pulmonary edema, the lungs are like fluid-soaked sponges. This is commonly seen with a weakened or damaged heart. Please look at "interstitial edema" for a slightly different description that may help you understand this better.
PULMONARY EMBOLISM (PE)
Blood clot within a blood vessel (pulmonary artery) in the lungs. (Please note that there are multiple pulmonary arteries supplying different sections of the lungs.)
PULMONARY HYPERTENSION
Increased pressure in the pulmonary arteries.
PULMONARY NODULE
A white dot in the lung on a chest x-ray. This may represent early cancer. Alternatively, this can be associated with an infection, inflammation or metastatic disease. Also known as "nodule" or "lung nodule".
PULMONARY VASCULAR CONGESTION
Early stage of pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs).
