PNEUMATOCELE
An “air bubble” in the lung that can form after pneumonia or trauma. This looks similar to a bulla, but the cause is different.
PNEUMATOSIS
Air in the wall of the intestine. Can be seen with ischemic (lacking oxygen supply) intestine, which can be a life-threatening condition. But, it can be also seen with infection or other benign causes.
PNEUMOMEDIASTINUM
Air in the mediastinum. This can be caused by a number of things including asthma, tear in the airways (trachea or bronchi) and tear of the esophagus.
PNEUMOTHORAX
An "air leak" in the lungs.
POLYP
A non-cancerous swelling of tissue in the sinuses or nasal cavity. These are usually benign but can grow and cause symptoms.
POPCORN CALCIFICATION
A calcification deposit that is shaped like a popcorn or small chunks of cookie dough. This is usually associated with a fibroadenoma (a benign tumor). Also known as "coarse calcification".
PORTABLE CHEST X-RAY
Chest x-ray that is taken with a portable x-ray machine. It is usually performed on sicker patients who cannot be moved to the x-ray room for a standard x-ray.
PORTAL VEIN
Blood vessel that carries blood from the intestine into the liver.
PORTAL VENOUS AIR/GAS
Air in the portal vein. One of the cause can be pneumatosis (air in the wall of intestine) from ischemic bowel (intestine lacking oxygen supply), a life-threatening condition.
POSITIVE
Often used in radiology reports to describe a process this is consistent with disease. For example the report may state "positive for cancer" which means that there is cancer present.
