PINEAL GLAND CYST
A collection of fluid that occurs in the pineal gland. They are most often benign and not cancerous.
PITUITARY
A small gland in brain that makes hormones.
PITUITARY CYST
A cyst, or fluid collection, that occurs in the pituitary gland.
PITUITARY STALK
A short toothpick shaped structure that connects the pituitary gland to the brain. It is also called the “infundibulum”.
PLANAR
A term in MRI used to describe how a scan is made. There are different “planes” on MRI such as sagittal, coronal, axial, and oblique.
PLANTAR
Means on the bottom side of something.
PLANTAR FASCIITIS
Inflammation at the bottom of the heel.
PLEOMORPHIC
Adjective. This is used to describe the shape of microcalcifications. These are irregular, jagged and of different sizes. Some of you may remember crushing and grinding rocks when you were playing as a kid. These are shaped like tiny crushed rocks on a mammogram.
PLEURA
A thin plastic wrap-like material that covers the outside of the lungs (visceral pleura) and the inside of the chest cavity (parietal pleura).
PLEURAL EFFUSION
Fluid in the chest (pleural) cavity, surrounding the lungs. Sometimes, this can compress the lung next to it.
