ILEOSTOMY
Surgical procedure where the ileum (last part of small intestine) is connected to an opening in the skin. A bag is attached to the hole to collect stool.
ILEUM
Last part of the small intestine.
ILL-DEFINED
Adjective. Unclear shape and/or margins. Sometimes used to describe a density on a chest x-ray.
ILL-DEFINED (breast)
Adjective. This is used to describe the margins of a breast mass. It means that the margins are irregular or fuzzy. This is a descriptor used for a suspicious mass.
INCARCERATED
Hernia that is stuck and cannot be corected by simple manipulation.
INFARCT
Death of tissue/ bone. Often from lack of oxygen supply.
INFARCTED
Dead tissue. Often from lack of oxygen supply. For example, infarcted myocardium means dead heart tissue.
INFARCTION
Process of tissue/ bone death.
INFARCTION (chest)
A process where tissue (i.e. brain, lung) "dies" due to lack of oxygen. This can be seen in stroke (brain) or pulmonary embolism (lung).
INFERIOR VENA CAVA
Large vein that connects to the heart (right atrium) from below. It drains blood from the abdominal organs and legs.
