FORAMEN OF MEGENDIE
A small opening or passage in the back of the brain where CSF can exit the fourth ventricle and spill into the spinal cord. It is a normal structure.
FORAMINAL DISC HERNIATION
The disc is directed towards the side of the spine where the nerve roots exit the spinal canal. A disc in this location will cause a "radiculopathy" or a shooting, electric pain or sensation down the body or extremity.
FOREFOOT
Front of the foot toward the toes.
FOREIGN BODY
Anything that is not part of our body. For example, a bullet fragment in the body is considered a foreign body.
FORNIX
A portion of the corpus callosum. It is a normal anatomical structure.
FOSSA OF ROSENMULLER
An atomic space in the back of the throat that can be a location for cancer. Often the ear, nose and throat doctor can see tumors in this location but a CAT scan can look for even deeper signs of disease.
FOURTH VENTRICLE
The piece of the ventricle located in the middle of the cerebellum. It communicates with the third ventricle and helps push cerebral spinal fluid or “CSF” into the spinal canal.
FRACTURE
Broken bone.
FREE AIR
Abnormal air in the abdomen. Typically air should be seen only in the bowel ("intestine"). Air outside of bowel can be a sign of perforated ("leaky") stomach or bowel, which can be a life-threatening condition. Free air can be a normal finding after recent surgery in the abdomen.
FREE FLUID
Water within the abdomen or pelvis that sloshes around freely (i.e. not trapped in one spot). In some cases, it is a normal finding. For example, young female patients can have small amount of free fluid in the pelvis. Other times, it is abnormal. It can be from a number of different causes (both benign and cancerous).
