DISCOID ATELECTASIS
A flat area of compressed or deflated lung that looks like a white line on a chest x-ray.
DISLOCATION
Misplaced bone.
DISPLACEMENT
Describes how one bone is misplaced in relation to another bone.
DISTAL
Far end of something. Towards the feet. The opposite of proximal which is towards the head.
DIVERTICULA
Multiple diverticulum (see above).
DIVERTICULITIS
Inflammation of an outpouching. Commonly used to describe "colonic diverticulitis", inflammation of an outpouching (often called "tic") in the colon.
DIVERTICULOSIS
Multiple outpouchings. Commonly used to describe outpouching in the colon.
DIVERTICULUM
Outpouching of a body part. For example, colonic diverticulum refers to outpouching of colon (large intestine).
DOBHOFF TUBE
A type of feeding tube that is placed into the stomach or small intestine through the esophagus. It is "snaked" through the nostril or mouth. It is used to "feed" the patient by pumping a nutrient liquid through the tube.
DOLICHOECTASIA
Refers to blood vessels that are loose or “floppy” rather than straight. Think of a water hose that is loose until you turn the water on. It is a descriptive word and is not necessarily abnormal.
