COMPRESSION
A loss of vertebral height which can be related to a recent (acute) or old (chronic) process such as a fracture. This can be mild (less than 20%) or severe (more than 80%). Please see "vertebra" and "vertebral body".
COMPRESSION DEFORMITY
Deformed appearance the back bone caused by the collapse of a vertebra. This can be caused by acute or chronic fracture. Please see "vertebra" and "vertebral body".
COMPRESSION FRACTURE
Broken spine bone. Fracture causes some degree of collapse within the vertebra.
CONCHA BULLOSA
An air pocket that develops in the nasal turbinates. It is usually of no consequence.
CONDYLE
Rounded edge at the end of a long bone.
CONGENITAL
Refers to a process that you are born with.
CONSOLIDATION
An area of the lung that is soaked with fluid, commonly seen in pneumonia. In this process, the airspace is filled with fluid PLUS the "tissue" part of the lung is soaked with fluid.
CONTRALATERAL
Adjective. Opposite side. If a woman says, "I have pain in my right breast, but the contralateral breast is fine.", it means that the left breast is fine.
CONTRE-COUP
Refers to the brain injury that occurs at the opposite side of impact or trauma. For example, if you hit your head on the right side, then the left may experience the contre-coup injury.
CONTUSION
A "bruise" of a body part caused by trauma.
