ALIGNMENT

The way that the vertebrae (backbone) are stacked on top of each other.  Normally aligned vertebrae are stacked on each other like Lego blocks without slippage.

BONE ISLAND

A benign or non-cancerous growth of bone inside of bone.  Is usually of no consequence but can be confused with a tumor.

The first cervical vertebra.

CAUDA EQUINA

Describes the tiny nerves coming off the tip of the spinal cord. They resemble the hairs on a horse’s tail, thus the name. When they are squeezed or pinched from spinal stenosis they can cause symptoms of pain or numbness.

CENTRAL DISC HERNIATION

This is disc material that points towards the center and front of the spinal sac.  This can compress and narrow (or squeeze) the spinal space depending on the severity.
