ACCESSORY SALIVARY TISSUE
A normal variation of anatomy with “extra” salivary gland tissue. Is usually of no consequence unless they get infected or cancerous.
ACOUSTIC NEUROMA
A tumor arising from the nerve tissue of the inner ear. They are usually benign but can often grow and cause symptoms such as hearing loss. They can be surgically removed if too big. It is also called a vestibular schwanomma.
ADENOID CYSTIC CARCINOMA
A cancer of the salivary glands.
ADENOIDAL HYPERPLASIA
An enlargement or growth of the lymph nodes or tonsils of the neck. Usually seen in younger patients and often benign. Can be a sign of infection or occasionally cancer.
ADENOPATHY
Refers to enlarged or abnormal lymph nodes. Both benign conditions (such as infection/ inflammation) and cancer can cause this.
ALLERGIC FUNGAL SINUSITIS
This is a sinus infection this is caused by a fungus rather than a bacterium or virus. It usually requires treatment by an ENT doctor. It has a characteristic look on CT with bright or “dense” secretions.
AMELOBLASTOMA OF THE MANDIBLE
A benign growth of the jaw or mandible. Presents as a hard but painless mass, is slow growing, and often goes unnoticed. Rarely becomes cancerous. Can be surgically removed but do not require chemotherapy or radiation treatment.
ANGIOEDEMA (neck)
A swelling of the tissues of the neck. May be a sign of an underlying infection or a drug reaction. This could cause troubles with breathing as the airway could be blocked.
ANTROCHOANAL POLYP
A growth of tissue in the sinuses or air pockets of the face. These are located in the maxillary sinus and extend into the nasal cavity and back of the throat.
ARYEPIGLOTTIS
Located behind the epiglottis forming the structure of the swallowing mechanism.
