The belly.  The area of the body that is below the chest and above the pelvis.

A pocket of pus associated with an infection.

ACUTE RESPIRATORY DISTRESS SYNDROME (ARDS)

A disease process that causes the blood vessels in the lungs to be “leaky”.  This results in lungs that are “soaked” with fluid.  The end result is pulmonary edema.

AERATION

Inflating the lung with air.

AIR BRONCHOGRAM SIGN

Distinct outlining of the small airways in the lungs on a chest x-ray.  This is most commonly seen in pneumonia.

AIR SPACE DISEASE

Fluid in a part of the lungs.  Normally, all parts of the lungs should be filled with air.  This term is interchangeable with “alveolar disease”.  This is often seen with pneumonia or severe pulmonary edema.

AIR-FLUID LEVEL

A finding that indicates the presence of both air and fluid in a pocket.  This can be seen with a cavitary process or a hiatal hernia.

ALVEOLAR DISEASE

Fluid in a part of the lungs.  Normally, all parts of the lungs should be filled with air. This term is interchangeable with “air space disease”.  This is often seen with pneumonia or severe pulmonary edema.

ALVEOLI

Tiny air-filled bubble like structures that make up the lung. Think of a fluffy sponge.  The alveoli are like the small airspaces in the sponge.
